If you’re a self publishing author, then you know how difficult it can be to make your uploaded ebook look the way it does in your formatted PDF or word document. You quickly realize the best format to upload is a mobi file, but trying to figure out how to convert your word document into a mobi file can seem to be a steep learning curve. However in reality it is very simple and easy to do. Not only is it simple but it’s free. While I do offer ebook formatting services, part of being indie is helping each other out which is why I like to share these helpful bits of knowledge. I know there are many authors out there who simply cannot afford to hire a formatter and out of necessity are forced to do it themselves. So what is the easiest way to convert your word document into the kindle ebook format? One word, Calibre.
What is Calibre? Calibre is a free and open source e-book library management application developed by users of e-books for users of e-books. Sounds complicated but it really isn’t. Calibre does all of the hard work for you, but best of all it’s absolutely free. You simply need to save your word document as an HTML file. You can do this by clicking save as in your word document and choosing web page filtered. A message will appear just click ok and your file will be converted to an HTML file. You can then use that file and the calibre software to easily convert your file into a kindle ebook format or mobi file. Not only will it convert for Kindle but it does epub for Nook as well. If you have any questions or issues using the software, feel free to leave a question in the comments section or contact me via email.
